Many people live in bigger bodies and knowing how to make fat people of all sizes feel seen, welcome and included is not only the right thing to do, at times legally required, but it's also great for profits, client and employee retention, and company reputation.

Profits - Client and Employee Retention - Reputation

If you’re committed to unlearning unhelpful messages we have been told about fat bodies and want to share that message with your team (and make sure you aren’t inadvertently causing harm with your work) then you’re in the right place.

Do any of these statements resonate?

  • Your organization is further along in your DEI journey and ready to talk about fat liberation

  • You’re part of a DEI team, DEI committee or Employee Resource Group and want to learn more about anti-fat bias to implement into your DEI practice

  • You want people in larger bodies to feel seen, heard, and feel safe working with you

  • You’ve recognized that weight inclusion has barely been considered in DEI planning and want to rectify that

  • You understand more laws and policies are being passed protecting fat folks from discrimination and want to be set up so that you can mitigate any future litigation from those experiencing discrimination by stopping it from happening in the first place

  • You care so deeply about size diversity and worry that you may be saying or doing things that could hurt fat folks without even realizing it

  • You want to feel confident that you understand anti-fat bias so that you can be a competent fat-ally

  • You’re not a fat person, recognize your size privilege and want to use the influence you have to educate your clients and staff on weight bias and body acceptance

  • You want to make sure that your workplace is welcoming to fat people

If any of those statements resonated with you then welcome, you’re in the right place.

Why this work is important outside of it just being the right thing to do

Many people live in bigger bodies. By not understanding weight bias and failing to tailor your Diversity, Equity and Inclusion plans to speak to fat folks you’re missing out on having a positive impact on a significant section of your employee population.

Companies that have greater diversity, inclusion, and equity have increased impact, make more money and staff are happier (more effective and have higher retention rates).

Stronger staff experiences of DEI translate to stronger organizations. Our data reveals a direct correlation between staff experiences of DEI and their Net Promoter Score (a measure of satisfaction) as well as their Intent to Stay (a measure of retention)” - Unrealized-Impact Study 2.0

Employees and customers will feel more understood

“When companies establish inclusive business cultures and policies, they are more likely to report:

  • 59.1% increase in creativity, innovation, and openness.

  • 37.9% better assessment of consumer interest and demand” - Catalyst.org

Increased revenue

DEI is linked to better financial health of companies including higher earnings. - PIIE

Improved company reputation

Organizations with inclusive business cultures and practices are 57.8% more likely to improve their reputations - ILO

Talent and productivity is maximized and you’re more able to retain talent and attract customers

“They feel valued, trusted, authentic, and psychologically safe” - Catalyst.org

Is your organization legally required to protect fat folks from discrimination?

Did you know that weight is a protected class in several locations? These include New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Michigan State and many other places.

Why is this important to know?

Your organization could be discriminating against those in larger bodies which is against the law. Many people are unaware of these protections and leave their companies open to litigation.

Not only is treating people of all body sizes equitably the right thing to do it is predicted that in the future fat folks will be protected at the federal level (as well the established local levels) and something that organizations MUST do.

Why work with Weight Inclusive Consulting

The big questions to ask:

  • Do you want to increase your revenue, improve your company reputation, and understand and serve 67% of the market?

  • Do you want fat people to feel safe and seen when interacting with you and your organization?

  • Do you want to feel safe knowing you have limited the chance that you could cause pain to folks with fat bodies?

It is no longer acceptable for organizations to operate with anti-fat bias going unchecked even if that bias is unintentional. It’s time for us all to do better (and reap the rewards of those efforts). Thank you for being a part of the solution!

Diversity statement

If you share our values then we could be a good fit to work together

If you don’t share the same basic values as us then unfortunately we won’t be a fit to work together. Here is what we believe:

  • Fat liberation is the backbone of Weight Inclusive Consulting and we are unable to work with clients who perpetuate anti-fat bias by offering diets or weight-loss solutions. This also includes engaging in healthism. However, if you are looking to unlearn anti-fat bias we can help with that.

  • Diversity, equity and inclusion are critical to Weight Inclusive Consulting. We believe that all humans regardless of how their humaness manifests (whether it be size, race, disability, age, socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity, sexuality or any other identity) are worthy of equity, inclusion and celebration.
